Swimmers will be expected to work hard, and the programme is designed to give swimmers a unique experience. On the first day there will be some free time for swimmers in the city of Bath but overall the programme is designed to enhance swimmers current training at Dinnaton and swimmers will be expected to give 100%.

Scottish National Short Course Championships 2010

Laura Lamb travelled up to Glasgow to take part in the Scottish National

Short Course Competition. As this was an open competition against mainly

older swimmers Laura was aiming for personal best times and to broaden

her experience of swimming at national level. Her first swim was 50m

backstroke and she achieved a good personal best time of 32.45 coming

23rd overall and 3rd fastest of the 14 year olds, she also achieved a

personal best time in her 200m backstroke and swam well in her freestyle

and IM. Her best swim was on the last day when she achieved a personal

best time of 1.08.65 for her 100m backstroke, again 23rd overall out of 80

and 4th in her age group. The star of the competition was Hannah Miley

who achieved 10 national golds and is now preparing for the

Commonwealth games. It was a great experience for Laura to be

swimming in the same events as such exciting british talent and to achieve

such good times.

Thanks to Sue Albutt for this report!

Plymouth Leander Level 1 Long Course Meet

Two swimmers attended the Plymouth Leander Level 1 Long Course

Christmas meet at Millfields (not club supported) looking for improved

times. The meet kicked off on the Friday evening with the mixed 1500m

free with Megan (Bowen) swimming an absolutely amazing race where

she came in 10 secs under the national time for the 800m at the split

(improving on her national time achieved at Cardiff) and stormed home

in an incredible time of 18:36:37 - a huge 35 seconds inside the 12yr old

national time and some 20 seconds inside the 13yr old national time!

This performance, taking Gold and a new Meet record, prompted

comments by the announcers at the high standard of coaching at

Dinnaton producing results like this! A very proud moment!!

On the Saturday Megan competed in the 200m free - a huge task to

switch from 1500 to 200 but she attacked it with real spirit and

determination taking Gold in a time of 2:18:26 just 0.78secs outside

the national time! David Hammond then swam a fantastic 200m

Back storming home with a great 4 second PB of 2;47:75 only 4 secs

off his national time! The two Dinnaton swimmers did the club proud

at a really well attended meet up against really tough competition from

all over the UK and even including swimmers from Dubai!

Thanks to Sandy Bowen for this report!

Congratulations to the Dinnaton Team

for a Fabulous Effort in the Final Round

of the Arena National Swimming League!

The final round of the National swimming league was held at

Riverside Leisure Centre in Exeter on Saturday 12th December.

With fewer swimmers available than in previous rounds, it was a

hard task before them, but one that the team rose to and showed

their true colours!

A tense crowd watched the swimmers moving closer and closer

towards the leading club only missing out on the top position by a

small margin. The Open boys team took us home in style by winning

the final event with ease.

Team points were

Clevedon - 187

Dinnaton - 183

Glamorgan Valleys - 147

Newton Abbot - 144

Stroud - 83

Dinnaton Junior Club Championships

This year the club held it's junior championships separate from the seniors,

due to them having to be slotted in to suit the Club's busy program and by

default this has set a trend that hopefully will be carried on in future years.

The Junior Championships were held over Five sessions where 16 events

were swum with only two exceptions from the full Olympic Program which

were the 400 IM and 1500 freestyle. In excess of 45 swimmers took part

and it would be accurate to say that we just comfortably achieved all swims

within the allocated time.

We swim the Club Championships at this time of year to allow all swimmers

to compete and achieve Devon Qualifying times for the coming Devon

Championships which will be held in the first three months of 2010. I am

sure that more Devon Times have been achieved by our juniors this year

than ever before. The age group of the swimmers taking part was .7 - 13

years and it would be difficult to find a more keen group anywhere in sport.

No sooner had a competitor finished their race, they were up and cheering

for their friends and rivals in a sporting demonstration second to none and

I was very proud of them to say the least. I commend this spirit to all parents

who are wondering whether their children should be involved intensely in a

sport as a terrific opportunity in positive mental and physical, child

development.

We started on Thursday 26th November and there was one session each

day finishing on Monday 30th where all 45 swimmers turned up for a grand

finale.

An indication of the great spirit that was prevalent throughout the

Championships was on Sunday morning when we found that we had a

spare hour and asked for volunteers from B2 for an extra event, the 800

freestyle for boys and girls. Twelve hands instantly shot up and it would

be fair to say that if I could bottle their genuine enthusiasm I could make

millions. We also swam 5 full heats of the 200 butterfly.

I do not have the overall results yet, as they have to be processed and put

in age groups which will probably take a week but suffice it to say that the

Club is extremely proud of their junior competitors, and if the seniors can

demonstrate a fraction of their spirit, their championships too will be a

resounding success.

Well done to the competitors, the organiser (Steve Senior), all the willing

officials and the coaching staff who together have produced a wonderful

event.

BAGCATS AWARDS FOR DINNATON YOUNGSTERS

The final day of the City of Plymouth Championship was held on Saturday

24 October at Central Park and once again saw Dinnaton younger

swimmers hold centre stage. Swimmers taking part this weekend were:

9 Years Girls – Abigail Bartlett, Ella Windle, Ellie McCoy, Charlotte Craigie
and Emilia Long
9 Years Boys – Ben Gittins, James Senior
10 Years Boys – Jack Northmore,
11 Years Girls – Chloe Thompson, Laura Millington
12 Years Boys – Benjamin Douglass
12 Years Girls – Charlotte Stemp, Amber Bartlett
13 Years Boys – Eliott Millington
Senior Swimmers – Ryan and Laura Moreno-Chamorro

The morning session saw senior swimmers Ryan & Laura Moreno-Chamorro

competing for Dinnaton. Ryan won the 50m Breaststroke in a new City of

Plymouth record time and claimed the bronze medal for the 50m Butterfly in

the afternoon. Laura claimed bronze in the 50m Butterfly and 100m

Breaststroke before claiming her first gold of the meet in the 400m Individual

Medley.

In the afternoon session it was time once again for the young swimmers of

Dinnaton to take up the challenge and they did not disappoint with

performances every bit as good as the first weekend.

In the 11 year 100m Breaststroke Chloe Thompson swam magnificently to

take the gold medal and her time meant that she was the youngest qualifier

for the Championship final, where she swam admirably for 6th place.

In addition to her breaststroke achievements, Chloe claimed silver in the

200m Freestyle.

Dinnaton swimmers’ excelled in the 9 year old 200m Freestyle to take 5 of

the first 8 places. Gold medal went to Eleanor McCoy, silver to Abigail Bartlett

and bronze to Ella Windle.

In the boys 9 year old 200m Individual Medley, Ben Gittens continued his

performances from the first weekend taking the gold medal with a time

just outside a championship record. Jack Northmore matched his team-mate

in the 10 year old age group with another gold medal to add to his collection.

At the end of the gala it was time to see who had swam consistently well

across both weekends to win BAGCAT awards. Dinnaton swimmers

dominated the younger age group.

Dinnaton claimed 4 of the first 5 positions in the 9 year old girls BAGCAT.

First place was won by Abigail Bartlett with team-mate Eleanor McCoy

close behind in the second place. Ella Windle swam well throughout to

claim 4th as did Emilia Long for 5th position.

Not to be outdone, it was the same story for the 9 year old boys BAGCAT

where Dinnaton once again took 4 of the first 5 places. Ben Gittens, who

dominated the gala for 9 year olds, was confirmed in a well deserved first

place, confirming his reputation as one of the leading 9 year old swimmers

in the county.

Dinnaton’s depth of talent in the younger age groups was confirmed with

second place for James Senior, 4th place to Quinn Jones and 5th place

to Harry Tebbet.

Jack Northmore showed plenty of determination and lots of swimming

talent to hold off some talented local opposition to take first place in the

10 year old boys BAGCAT.

In a very tough and tight competition, Chloe Thompson claimed joint

second place in the 11 year old girls BAGCAT, only 12 points behind

the winner.

In the 13 year old boys BAGCAT Elliot Millington took 6th place.

Congratulations must be given to all Dinnaton swimmers who performed

superbly across both weekends of the City of Plymouth gala, with many

personal best times achieved (see attached Dinnaton swimmer results

from Day 3). Dinnaton’s overall tally included 28 gold medals, 17 silver

medals and 9 bronze medals as well as 5 championship record times.

Thanks to Development Coach John Wright, Carolyn Northmore and all

of young assistant coaches whose efforts are helping the young Dinnaton

swimmers realize their potential.

Thanks to Mike Moreno-Chamorro for this great report.

City of Plymouth Championship Report

First Weekend 2009
The running total medal tally for our “Junior Swimmers” at “The Cities”

was an amazing 48; comprising 21 Gold, 15 Silver and 12 Bronze

which has given a real lift to the young squad who have been training

together under Development Coach John Wright, ably assisted by

Carolyn Northmore and a team of young assistant coaches.
The Eighteen Swimmers taking part were:
9 Years Girls – Abigail Bartlett, Ella Windle, Ellie McCoy, Charlotte Craigie

and Emilia Long
9 Years Boys – Ben Gittins, James Senior, Quinn Jones and Harry Tebbet
10 Years Girls – Holly Craig
10 Years Boys – Jack Northmore, Travis Bramley
11 Years Girls – Chloe Thompson, Laura Millington
12 Years Boys – Benjamin Douglass
12 Years Girls – Charlotte Stemp, Amber Bartlett
13 Years Boys – Eliott Millington
Senior Swimmers – Ryan and Laura Moreno-Chamorro

Since re-organisation of the Junior Squad just over 12 months ago,

the coaches have worked very hard to develop the latent talent which

is undoubtedly at Dinnaton.

Very impressive were our Nine Year old Team, most of who have had

their birthday’s in the last couple of months and after this first outing

to display their ability, the coaching staff and all who observed their

efforts were well impressed.

Nine year old Abigail Bartlett clearly outclassed the other Plymouth

and District Clubs by winning three events: 200 Butterfly, 200 Back

Stroke and 200 Individual Medley. Two unfortunate DQ’s where she

was the fastest competitor prevented her from doing a clean sweep

but the writing is on the wall for a very good future and she is learning fast.

The other 9 year old girls also made fine contributions to Dinnaton’s

Medal Tally. Ellie McCoy was first in 200 Breaststroke and 100 Individual

Medley. Ella Windle won Silver in 200 Individual Medley, 200 Butterfly,

200 Individual Medley and Bronze in 100 Individual Medley. Milly Long

was 3rd in 200 Breaststroke and well placed in her other events.

In the 9 year old boys races Ben Gittins was supreme winning 200

Breaststroke in a Cities Competition Record, 200 Butterfly, and 200

Freestyle in another Competition Record. To top this off he won the

100 Individual Medley in yet another, leaving just the 200 Individual

Medley in the next round. Who can stop this prodigious talent?

James Senior in an early heat broke the existing 200 Breaststroke

record but had to settle for silver after Ben’s swim. Still he swam

beautifully and there is so much to come over the next year and

beyond as he proved with a third place in 200 Freestyle. Quinn Jones

won silver in 200 Freestyle and Harry Tebbet silver in 200 Breaststroke

– our 9 years boys and girls were AWESOME............

For me, 10 year old Jack Northmore came of age in swimming

terms this weekend as he won all but one of his races, 100 Individual

Medley, 200 Butterfly and 200 Back Stroke. He had to be satisfied with

3rd in 200 Breaststroke but I am sure he went home well chuffed with

himself after a fantastic weekend. Roll on the Devon Championships

when we will be looking for great things.

In the Girls 11 years age group for girls Chloe Thompson who I have

recently promoted to “A” squad status was magnificent in a very strong

age-group and she was first in 100 Front Crawl, 100 Individual Medley,

100 Butterfly, and 200 Individual Medley. She was 2nd in 200 Breaststroke

and 400 Freestyle and 3rd in 100 Butterfly Championship.

In the Girls 12 year age group Charlotte Stemp won Bronze in 400 Freestyle.
In the seniors, Laura and Ryan Moreno-Chamorro won many medals

between them with Laura winning three silvers in 400m Freestyle, 100

Back Stroke and 200 Individual Medley. She won bronze in 200

Breaststroke and 100 Individual Medley. Ryan won gold in 100

Breaststroke, 100 Breaststroke Championship and 200 Breaststroke.

He also won silver in 100 Back Stroke and bronze in 100 IM
Everyone else who took part (See list of swimmers above)

swam really well and all achieved very good PB’s

Thanks to John Wright for this fabulous report.

The future looks golden for dinnaton!

Carn Brea Open Meet at Penzance Leisure Centre began with the

toughest event of the meet, the 200m Butterfly. Megan Bowen

got the competition and her birthday off to a tremendous start

winning it with ease. She then went on to win four more gold medals

in the 200m freestyle, 200 IM, 100 butterfly and 100m Freestyle. In

addition to this she achieved three championship records to

complete a very successful day for the young swimmer.

Charlotte Evans also won gold at the 200m Butterfly in a new

championship record, she went on to achieve second place in the

100m breaststroke event as well. Laura Lamb smashed the

championship record in the 100m Backstroke winning gold in a

time of 1.12.60, she also finished in first place in the 200m IM and

took a silver and bronze in the 200m freestyle and 100m breaststroke

respectively.

Callum Clay swam a terrific 100m backstroke taking gold in a time

of 1.03.00 this was a new championship record for Carn Brea and a

excellent personal best time for Callum. David Hammond

achieved a championsip record in the 200m Freestyle taking yet

another gold at this middle distance event, even more impressively

he gained the meet record and gold in the 200 backstroke which was

a 12 second personal best time and a qualifying time for the year above

at the Western Counties.

The success was continued by Sally Carter who won four golds

in the following events,100m Freestyle, 200m Freestyle, 100m Butterfly

and 200m Backstroke, she also took a silver in the 100m Backstroke,

another considerable achievement by a Dinnaton swimmer.

William Potter took the fourth gold for a Dinnaton swimmer at the

200m Freestyle event as well as first place in the 200m Backstroke

with an excellent new championship record. He went on to win gold

in the 200m IM, 100m backstroke and 100m Freestyle showing

tremendous promise for the future. Harriet Tuck swam with power

to take the gold in the 200m backstroke smashing an incredible 9

seconds off her personal best time. She went on to take silver in

the 100m backstroke and bronze in the 100m freestyle.

Another success story was the performance given by Jasmin Morgan

in the 200m backstroke where she took gold in a time of 2.33.80. Chris

Farmer achieved some great personal best times swimming in the

highly competitive 16 and over category, he took the silver medal in the

200m Freestyle and the bronze in the 200m IM. He and Callum Clay

entertained the crowd in the 50m freestyle engaging in a battle of will

and strength that resulted in identical times of 26.81 for them both!

Josie Bray, Tait Marles and Faye Hammond showed impressive

improvements in personal best times, narrowly missing out on the medals.

Dinnaton are in the zone! Bring it on!

In a friendly gala at Exeter Pyramids, Dinnaton demonstrated that they

were more than ready for the first round of the National Swimming league.

The 11 and under girls showed great promise for the future of the club

and the boys from this age group took their place at the top of the

leaderboard. The 13 and under girls showed the breadth of their talents,

the boys were small in number but great in strength.

In the 15 year old category Brad and the 'borrowed boys' made good

of a tricky situation with a particularly exceptional swim in the

breaststroke event. The girls were full of pace and determination and

were close behind Exeter City in most of the events.

In the open category the men were very competitive and keen to keep

ahead of their Exeter rivals, with many swimmers swimming up in the

women's events it was a tough challenge but one which all the girls

rose to admirably. This was a great show from Dinnaton and one

which signalled their readiness for the competition ahead.

End of season celebration

at Plymouth Leander Open Meet

The final event of the Dinnaton season took place on July

18th and 19th at Central Park pool. Team spirit was terrific

as they were motivated and inspired to achieve by Head

Coach Alan Rooker. The small team made an impact on the

meet and many swimmers won their heats with confidence.

David Hammond finished in second place in the 100m butterfly

event and was the only Dinnaton swimmer to medal in this

stroke. The backstroke events demonstrated the improved

technique of many of the swimmers in this stroke. Laura

Lamb swam an incredible time of 2.30 to take the gold medal

in the 200m distance. Laura went on to take the bronze award

in both the 50m and 100m backstroke. Callum Clay missed

out on gold by 0.02 in the open sprint event he took silver in

100m and bronze in the 200m event. In the 100m backstroke

David Hammond finished in 3rd position but improved this

place by one in the longer distance taking the silver medal.

Charlotte Evans completed this impressive show by taking

the bronze medal in the 15 and over 200m backstroke.

In the 15 and over category Hannah Kett took gold at 200m

breaststroke, beating her competitor from Milton Keynes in

an exciting and close event. Ben Gittens finished in first place

in the same event and Roisin Vosper gave a determined

performance to improve her personal best time by a number

of seconds. Ben Douglass took 2 seconds off his 50m

breaststroke time which will surely impact on his performance

in the longer distances of this stroke. Faye Hammond

improved her personal best times at 50m breaststroke

and backstroke by over a second in each event.

Amongst the many freestyle events the Dinnaton successes

included a silver medal for Ben Gittens in the 200m event.

Sally Carter took the bronze medal in both the 100m and

400m and also shaved just over 5 seconds off her 200m

personal best time. Harriet Tuck swam with tenacity to

improve her personal best times in a number of freestyle

events, having done much open water training recently it

is clear that she is leading the way in endurance swimming

at Dinnaton. David Hammond fought through to take third

place in 100m freestyle. Andrew Kett swam some strong

and confident 200m and 400m freestyle swims and helped

keep team spirit high. Success in the Individual Medley

came with Ben Gittens taking second in the 200m IM.

Dinnaton swimmers return triumphant

from the toughest race of the year!

Harriet Tuck and James Flanagan made their club proud

by taking the two of the top three places at the prestigious

Plymouth Breakwater race. James Flanagan took an impressive

lead and despite challenges from the leading pack reached the

finish well ahead.

Harriet Tuck in her first open water event, delighted the

Dinnaton crowd assembled by the quay, by coming in a close

third with a great time of 34 minutes. This success was well

deserved and down to her dedication and training in all

weather! Thank goodness that today there was not a

jellyfish in sight!!

Margaret Gardner Open

The Margaret Gardner Open which was held over the weekend 25-26th

July was attended by 21 Dinnaton swimmers and as usual it was a great

pleasure to spend a couple of days with our younger swimmers and

observe how they have developed over the last 12 months. This year 7

of our 8 year old swimmers had entered the event and they made up a

large proportion of the 17 swimmers taking part in this age group.

Most had never competed before.

At the other end of the scale were some of our seasoned "Older

Swimmers" all under the age of thirteen who came away with lots of

honours but I can honestly say that everyone without exception came

away with the intense satisfaction of doing their absolute best.

Taking top honours were 9 year old Ben Gittings and 10 year old David

Hammond who won 10 first places between them but the highlight of

the two days competition was for me the enthusiasm shown by all

especially in the 200 freestyle where everyone took part even our 8 year

olds with huge PBs.

Those taking part were Abigail Bartlett, Rebecca Chamberlain, Lauren

Hammond, Maisie Marles, Ella Windle, Taylor Wynn, Quinn Jones, Emilia

Long, Ellie McCoy, James Senior, Charlotte Craigie, Ben Gittins, Travis

Bramley, William Austin, David Hammond, Jack Northmore, Tait Marles,

Ben Douglass, Rebecca Johns, Faye Hammond, Luke Honey.

Success at Tiverton Sprint Meet

A small team of developing swimmers aged between 9

and 11 years attended the Tiverton sprint meet on Sunday

12th July. Ben Gittens swam with pace and consistency

and took gold in all five events finishing top in his age group.

David Hammond touched in third place in both the 50m back

stroke and 100m IM and went on to take silver in the 50m

freestyle.

James Senior finished in second place in the 50m breast

stroke after a terrific swim. Quinn Jones and Ben Douglass

reached several finals after some terrific personal best times.

Both Tait Marles and Faye Hammond swam with developing

technique and style in their respective age groups. Another

great effort from the Dinnaton team!

A tense night! A great result!

Dinnaton finish third in Cornwall and

West Devon League

The final of the Cornwall and West Devon league took place

at Bodmin Dragon leisure centre on Saturday 11th July to a

packed crowd of supporters. It was an eventful night for the

Dinnaton team, with some of the team getting lost and the lights

blowing out during the meet. After challenging the leaders

during the competition Dinnaton finished an impressive third

place. It was a great team effort and one that demonstrated

the strength of this small squad of talented swimmers.

Cardiff Open Meet 2009

Four swimmers attended the Cardiff Open meet, they were

magnificent, they all got into their finals, and there were

swimmers on the podium regularly. Megan Bowen came back

with 4 gold’s and a silver and William Potter took 2 bronze

with fantastic personal best times. Callum Clay reached his

first Championship final, and David Hammond swam extremely

well and qualified for several finals, before having to withdraw

due to illness. The meet was very well organised, and the

level of competition was high, with 4 British and Welsh records

falling during the meet. There were teams from 57 clubs

from the UK and Ireland. Dinnaton were the loudest

supporters there – small in number but big in voice!

Successful young swimmers at Devon development

An enthusiastic and committed team of Dinnaton swimmers

competed in the first weekend of the Development Gala

which was held at Exeter Pyramids Leisure Centre.

In the younger age group of 9 – 11 years the team was

Eleanor McCoy, Chloe Thompson, Tait Marles, Ben Gittens,

James Senior, Quinn Jones, Travis Bramley, Ben Douglass,

Ben Collins, Amber Bartlett and Charlotte Stemp.

All of the swimmers gave their best and were rewarded

with some excellent personal best times. Ben Gittens

showed his strength in the youngest age group and took

1st place in the 200m breaststroke, 200 IM and 200m

backstroke. Chloe Thompson was just pipped to the post

taking the silver in the 100m, 200m and 800m freestyle.

She also finished in second place in the 200m backstroke

and 100m butterfly, however she took over the lead in the

200m breaststroke bringing home gold in this event.

Tait Marles gave some great performances finishing in the

bronze medal position in both the 200m and 800m freestyle.

The older swimmers aged between 12 and 14 years

arrived for the second day of the Development Gala with

much to live up to. They took on the challenge and brought

home 5 golds, 3 silvers and 2 bronze medals between them.

Tom Carter began by taking 1st place in the 200m

breaststroke with his brother Sam finishing 3rd in the same

event. Andrew Kett showed stamina and pace completing

the gruelling 200m butterfly in the bronze medal position.

Josie Bray dominated many of the events that she entered

finishing in first place in the 400m freestyle, 100m backstroke

and 100m butterfly, just missing out on gold in the 200m

freestyle finishing in second place. Roisin Vosper was the

champion in the 200m breaststroke event and finished in style

almost ten seconds ahead of the next competitor. She then

went on to take the silver medal in both the 200m and 400m

freestyle events.

Jack Edwards, Faye Hammond and Becci Winstone swam

with style and determination, making significant progress

in their own age groups. Congratulations to everyone who

competed and good luck for this weekend!

The second weekend of the championships was equally

impressive for the Dinnaton team and saw successes for

Chloe Thompson taking the gold in 100m backstroke and

100m breaststroke, silver in 200 IM and 100 IM and bronze

in 400m freestyle. Ben Gittens took gold in 200m freestyle and

the 100m IM. Andrew Kett achieved the best time for his age

group in the 1500m time trial. All the swimmers demonstrated

their developing technique and pace and showed that these

younger swimmers have a promising future.

The 12 to 14 year olds were not to be outclassed however and

many more gutsy performances led to Roisin Vosper taking

bronze in the 200 IM, Tom Carter gaining silver in the 100

breaststroke and bronze in both the 200 free and 200m IM.

Nicholas Hosgood went on to finish in the following positions in

his smaller age group, gold in 200m IM and 100m breaststroke,

silver in the 200m freestyle and bronze in the 100m IM. Josie

Bray finished a close second in the 100m freestyle, 200m

backstroke and took the bronze in the 100IM.

In the bagcats competition the following Dinnaton swimmers

finished in the top three, Ben Gittens 1st, Chloe Thompson 2nd

and Tom Carter and Roisin Vosper 3rd. This was a terrific

achievement and one of which the club can be proud.

Dinnaton Dominate in Round 1
In probably the toughest draw of the Cornwall and West

Devon League, the Dinnaton team began their campaign

at Newton Abbot. Their opposition was Kingsbridge

Kingfishers, Newton Abbot and Tavistock.

They left the opposition on the blocks and won the first

three events of the night. This convincing start began a terrific

performance by the Ivybridge based club, who won nearly

half of the fifty one events and came a close second in many

more. Everyone in the team made their contribution to the

success. The 11 and under boys and the 13 and under girls

relay teams won both their medley and freestyle events.

Chris Farmer competing in the Men’s Open 100 freestyle

knocked several seconds off his personal best time finishing

in just 56 seconds.

Josh Dunn returned from injury to swim a convincing butterfly

leg in the successful Men’s open medley relay.

Incredible haul of medals at

Easter Meet

The Weston Super Mare meet over the Easter weekend has

always been popular with the Dinnaton swimmers and this

year was no exception. Adam Farmer came home laden with

nine awards, four golds, two silvers and three bronze. He

took the golds in 100 IM, 200 IM, 50m breaststroke and 50m

freestyle, an incredible achievement in one weekend.

Megan Bowen also made a significant impact taking three

gold medals, one silver and one bronze. Megan’s golds were

in 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle and 200m butterfly. Another

up and coming young swimmer Ben Gittens brought home

five awards, one first place in 100m freestyle, two second

and two third place trophies. Chris Farmer added

considerably to the Farmer haul by taking gold in the

gruelling 400m IM event, along with a silver and two bronze

awards.

Both David Hammond and William Potter took home an array

of medals in the backstroke and IM events, William taking

top honours in the 100m backstroke. Laura Lamb took

another four awards showing her strength particularly in

200m Freestyle where she finished first. Brad Mullarkey

literally flew across the pool to take silver in the 50m

butterfly. Tom Bromley was third in the 100m breaststroke

and Tom Carter took the same award in the 200m event.

Aside from the medals some fantastic achievements saw

many swimmers gaining qualifying times for regional events.

Many returned to Devon with improved times and confidence

in readiness for the busy summer season ahead, these

included Katy McCreery, Stephanie Bennett, Roisin Vosper,

Harriet Tuck, Grace Cunningham, Callum Clay, Jasmin

Morgan, Jasmine Dunn, Charlotte Evans, Sam Carter and

Ben Douglass.

Strong Performances in the Relay Gala

The Devon County relay gala at Central Park pool on

Saturday 28th March saw a positive and ambitious

Dinnaton squad begin their campaign. A strong team

of 9 and 10 year old boys led the way. Ben Gittens,

Jack Northmore, David Hammond and Travis Bramley

showed their competitive edge to finish just behind the

Leander team in the silver position for both the freestyle

and medley relays.
The girl’s team of Hannah Kett, Stephanie Bennett,

Harriet Tuck and Grace Cunningham showed great style

in the 15 – 16 years age group by winning the silver

medal in the medley relay and taking a well-deserved

bronze in the freestyle event. Callum Clay, Tom Bromley,

Chris Farmer and Alex Pearce claimed the bronze medal

after their successful performance in the medley event

in this age group.
Many other Dinnaton teams showed skill and determination

in their performances. The 13 and 14 years girl’s team

finished in the unfortunate position of fourth in both their

relay events and just missed out on the medals. These

relay successes will enable the swimmers to have

self-belief and to aim high in the upcoming Interclub and

Cornwall and West Devon competitions.

Dinnaton take the Sprint Gala by Storm

The Dinnaton machine kicked into action at the Devon

County Sprint Gala with swimmers from the club taking

9 top positions in the individual events. Ben Gittens and

Josie Bray both took top place in their age group for

points from the events. Ben had previously taken first

place in the 9 years 50m butterfly, freestyle and

backstroke, an incredible achievement and one of

which both he and his coach can be proud. Josie Bray

won both the freestyle and butterfly events in the 14

years girl’s category and also took the bronze position

in the backstroke. Brad Mullarkey showed enormous

potential in achieving much improved times in the

sprint meet as well as taking top honours in the butterfly

and backstroke 13 year old competition. He then went

on to take the silver position in the freestyle.

Chloe Thompson finished in first place in the

breaststroke race and also achieved second place

in the butterfly, a promising start for a young swimmer.

Both Quinn Jones and Tom Parry-Jones just missed

out on gold when they touched in second position in

the breaststroke and fly events. Jack Northmore made

a significant impression finishing in third position in both

the butterfly and freestyle events. This was a strong

performance by the Ivybridge based squad and there

were much improved performances by a number of

other Dinnaton swimmers notably; Tait Marles, Amber

Bartlett, Charlotte Stemp, Travis Bramley, Ben Douglass,

Tom Boyne, Emilia Long, Holly Craig, Faye Hammond,

Eliza Tilbury, Becci Winstone and Sam Carter. With so

many younger swimmers showing promise the club

must surely have an exciting time ahead.

Dinnaton finish Strongly

The final weekend of the counties was a tremendous

success for the competing swimmers from Dinnaton.

Many swimmers achieved new personal best times and

surprised themselves with great performances

and times that they had not expected. David Hammond

was the young star of the Championships taking two

gold medals in this final weekend in both 200 IM and

200 Freestyle. Laura Lamb finished in third place in the

hotly contested 200 Freestyle to take a bronze medal,

as did Callum Clay showing his strength in the 100m

backstroke. There was a bronze medal for Charlotte Evans

in the 200 Freestyle as well as being only the second

Dinnaton swimmer to make a championship final, where

she finished the 200m fly in fourth place, an impressive

achievement!

Finalists this weekend were; Charlotte Evans, Stephanie

Bennett, Grace Cunningham, Wenna Carlson, Adam Farmer,

Callum Clay, Tom Bromley, Chris Farmer, Laura Lamb,

Harriet Tuck, David Hammond, Jasmine Dunn, Megan

Bowen and Hannah Kett. Well done to all these for their

achievements.

A number of swimmers were unlucky enough to finish just

outside the finals but with excellent times, Tom Carter, Ben

Carter, Sally Carter, Brad Mullarkey, Ross Gittens, William

Potter and Jasmin Morgan should all be proud of some

fantastic swimming performances.

It just keeps on getting better!

The third weekend of the county championships marked yet

more success for the much improved Dinnaton athletes.

The outstanding achievement was marked by gold medals

for Ben Carter in the 50m backstroke and Laura Lamb in

100m freestyle. Silver medals were awarded for Jasmin

Morgan in the 400m freestyle and Callum Clay for 50m

backstroke. Ben Carter finished third in the 100m butterfly

and gained a bronze medal as did Megan Bowen in 100m

freestyle. Charlotte Evans made the significant achievement

of bronze in both the 100m freestyle and 400m IM and

Hannah Kett took a well-deserved bronze medal in the 100m

breaststroke.

In addition to these medals an incredible number of Dinnaton

swimmers made the finals or top six in their age group, in the

50m backstroke Tom Bromley, Chris Farmer, Jasmin Dunn,

Stephanie Bennett and Jasmin Morgan all reached the top

six. In the 100m freestyle Ben Carter and Adam Farmer were

both required to stay for the final session. The effect of the

long course training at Yelverton, was to be seen in the 400m

freestyle where 6 more swimmers from Dinnaton, made the

age group finals, they were Adam Farmer, Chris Farmer,

Megan Bowen, Laura Lamb, Sally Carter and Harriet Tuck.

The breaststroke event this weekend saw Charlotte Evans,

Laura Lamb and Stephanie Bennett race 100m in the finals.

Often the most important goal in entering the county

championships is in achieving improved personal best times

in order to gain qualifying times for other events in a

competitively charged atmosphere. Much credit should be

given therefore to Grace Cunningham, Wenna Carlson, Brad

Mullarkey, Alysha Prowse, Roisin Vosper, William Potter and

Tom Carter who smashed their previous best times.

Josh Dunn was unable to compete this weekend due to injury,

he was much missed and we wish him a speedy recovery.

CLUB CAPTAIN ELECTION 2008

At the Club Captains election on Sunday 23rd November before the Club Championships Sprint Gala Jasmin Morgan was

elected to the post of Girls Club Captain - Chris Farmer was re-elected to the post of Boys Club Captain - Well done to

you both.

Western Counties Qualifying time for Harriet

As a Swimming Coach - Occasionally one comes across a performance which gives you great pleasure. Harriet has been

swimming at Dinnaton for around two years and in the main part without distinction. Both Chief Coach and

Development Coach however agreed that one day soon Harriet would surprise the West Country with a stunning

performance and so it happened on Sunday17th November when she took part in the Reverse Distance Events at

Kingsbridge Swimming Pool. 15 Year Old Harriet was taking part in the 1500 metres for Ladies and achieved her first

ever Western Counties Qualifying time- Who would have thought, you might say, but we were not surprised - "Well done

Harriet - The first of many to come."

DINNATON CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS

While Harriet was busy at Kingsbridge - the rest of the club were enjoying their first weekend of the Club

Championships where they swim an Olympic program plus 50m events and the 100m Individual Memory. The highlight

of the Sunday afternoon session was the 100 IM when no less than 100 swimmer took part in 25 heats. Considering that

40 of the swimmers had never ever swum in a competitive race before and that some of them were as young as 7, made

this a remarkable event. Everyone started on the blocks and the turns were stunning. John our Development Coach

assisted by his team, and all the junior swimmers had been working very hard on starts and turns and remarked that he

was stunned with the outcome. Nobody could be singled out as everyone gave their all. Carrying on afterwards many of

these youngsters went on to swim in the 200 Freestyle and 100 breaststroke with similar results. More to come when we

have processed the results.
