On Sunday a group of Dinnaton coaches and teachers and one chairperson attended the course for the National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches.
Alan Rooker, Debbie Taylor, Fiona Collins, Emma-Jayne Craine , Harriet Tuck and Sally Potter underwent the full day of training which included a 2 hour practical session learning rescue techniques for various situations including an unconscious patient and one with a spinal injury. This was followed by a quick break for lunch and another practical session to learn CPR and basic first aid. A theory session followed, discussing Health and Safety issues and the rules and regulations governing the safe use of swimming pools.
There was a lot to take in before the assessor arrived to put the group through their paces with a set of tricky theory questions, a closely watched simulated resuscitation situation using both adult and child patients, and then the pool rescue test. This was more fun than expected, although the assessor was not up to being persuaded when it was suggested that Alan should have to deal with a whole squad of suddenly unconscious patients in the initiative part of the test!
All the candidates passed the Course and Assessment, which is great news for the individuals and for the Club - Well Done!
The next NRASTC course at Dinnaton will be on the 26th September. All teachers and coaches at Dinnaton should hold this award, so please put the date in your diary and let Sally Potter know if you can attend. We are also looking at the possibility of holding a National Pool Lifeguard course at Dinnaton. If you would be interested in taking the course, please let Sally know as soon as possible.
